HP Pro Liant servers and blades are a mainstay in the data center. The market leader for some years with good reason, Pro Liant technology represents a remarkably stable continuum of server hardware management tools. HP Smart Start CDs and DVDs have been used countless times since Compaq Pro Liant days to accelerate and standardize server deployments by integrating the right HP drivers and utilities into the OS installation process. No Smart Start for HP Gen8 Pro Liant, Windows Server 2012 A hardware migration to the Gen8 Pro Liant platform prompted HP to end the Smart Start legacy with version 8.70b (12/2011) being the last media version. HP stated that Smart Start will not be updated beyond version 8.70. Smart Start will still be available on the web for supported Pro Liant G7 and earlier servers through their supported end of life. Since Windows Server 2012 was not an operating system choice in Smart Start 8.70, it won't be possible to use Smart Start to install Windows Server 2012. New Gen8 and later Pro Liant servers use a different technique for assisted installation. There is no media kit included with Pro Liant Gen8 products. Intelligent Provisioning replaces Smart Start CDs for Pro Liant Gen8 servers. The software that came on Smart Start media is now embedded on a flash chip on Pro Liant Gen8 servers and Gen8 server blades. The pre-loaded flash chip is bootable when a user presses the F10 key during server boot ( POST). The server will then boot to the pre-loaded flash chip and show the Intelligent Provisioning software. New way to provision HP Pro Liant: Smart Update Manager ( HP- SUM) For everyone that does not have Pro Liant Gen8 servers, use the Service Pack for Pro Liant ( SPP) at to get firmware and software updates, since only Gen8 can use Intelligent Provisioning. You will also need to use the SPP if you are installing Windows Server 2012 on any HP.
Hi I have two Proliant ML310 G5's which I want to install Windows Server 2008. One 32bit Standard and one 64bit Standard. On both servers I have 2x 250 GB SATA Hot Plug drives connected to the onboard SATA RAID Controller, I have created a RAID1 mirror using the BIOS utility and made it bootable. I can see the array in the Windows Server 2008 setup and I can successfully copy files to it if I use the 2003 driver. I cannot find a suitable 2008 driver for this component. All is well until the copying files is completed and the first reboot happens, then it would appear that the installation is damaged. I have performed a recreation of the RAID array and reinstalled Windows Server 2008 three times now and got to the same point everytime. I can only assume that 2008 doesn't like the 2003 driver (which I can understand) is there a suitable 2008 driver for the Integrated SATA RAID controller on the ML310 G5? Any advice you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks Simon Read MCSE MBCS.
