Dateline: Updated: Introducing the Samsung HW- F450 There are certainly a lot of sound bars out there these days, but is it the right option for you? If you are considering a sound bar purchase, the Samsung HW- F450 is one affordable option to consider, especially if you own a newer Samsung TV (although that is not required - more on that later in the this post). The Basics To start with, the Samsung HW- F450 is a 2.1 channel audio system that comes packaged with a two-channel 35.7-inch wide sound bar and a wireless poweredsubwoofer. The sound bar speaker complement includes two 1.875-inch midrange speakers and one.75-inch tweeter for each channel, and the sound bar features a 6-inch driver augmented by a front mounted port for added low frequency response. Samsung states the total system power output capability is 280 watts. Audio Decoding and Processing Dolby Digital and DTS audio decoding are provided, as well as Samsung's 3 D Audio processing, which widens the sound field for a fuller listening experience than you can usually get from a two-channel sound bar. Connectivity For connectivity, the HW- F450 provides some interesting options. Physical connections include one HDMI input, one digital optical input, one 3.5mm analog stereo input, a USB port for accessing audio files from flash drives or other compatible USB devices, along with one HDMI output. The HDMI connections are 1080p and 3 D-pass through compatible (the HW-450 does not provide any additional video processing and the HDMI output is Audio Return Channel enabled. Bluetooth and Sound Share For added flexibility, the HW- F450 also provides wireless Bluetooth that enables you to stream audio from compatible portable devices, such as many smartphones and tablets. Soundbars! Soundbars! Come and get your soundbars! Not unlike the headphone market in the past few years, it seems like these units are poised to take over the world. But the one thing holding them back from Skynet-like rule is their questionable sound quality. Soundbars (or sound bars or surround bars or Crystal Surround Air Track Active Speaker Systems, as Samsung prefers) were introduced into the market as budget products. They were a way for people who didn’t care about surround sound to enjoy better-than- TV-speakers sound quality, without all of the jazz associated with a full-blown home theater system. Well, the market has evolved and now consumers want diminutive, sleek soundbars that can compete with larger, bulkier sound systems. Here comes Samsung with their HW- F750 Crystal Air Track Active Speaker System, but I’ll just call it the F750 soundbar, because I’m a simple person like that. With an MSRP of 9.99 and a vacuum tube input section, the F750 is Samsung’s attempt to break into the high-end soundbar market. But, are the tubes just a gimmick? Or does this unit have more than just a premium price? HW- F750 Features and Overview I covered the entire Samsung 2013 soundbar lineup in a previous article, including the F750, but was only able to speculate about its actual quality.
